The most sophisticated clinical service in the world is only as effective as the communication that surrounds it. Patients who do not understand the value of a programme do not engage with it. Members who cannot access clear explanations of their biomarker results do not act on them. MOCCA's work is fundamentally about strengthening the connection between health services and the people those services exist to help — building trust, reducing anxiety, and making the clinical environment feel less foreign and more human.

About MOCCA
MOCCA was founded by an individual holding a Bachelor of Medical Science (BMedSci) and a Doctor of Medicine (MD), with hands-on clinical experience across emergency medicine, anaesthetics, and intensive care — three of the highest-acuity, highest-complexity environments in medicine.
That background is not incidental to the work. Emergency medicine trains you to communicate clearly under pressure to people who are frightened and overwhelmed. Anaesthetics and intensive care train you to understand physiological systems at a level of precision that most health writing never approaches. The ability to explain a complex clinical concept in the three minutes before a patient goes to theatre — in a way they will actually remember and act on — is a skill that takes years to develop.
That is the experience MOCCA brings to every piece of work.

The health literacy gap is not distributed equally across Australia. In rural and remote communities — and particularly within Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities — barriers to health engagement are compounded by geography, cultural distance, systemic under-resourcing, and communications that were rarely designed with these audiences in mind.
MOCCA's longer-term vision is to extend its health communications work into these communities — developing culturally appropriate, accessible, and genuinely useful health education resources that support greater engagement with health services for those who have historically been least well served by the healthcare system.
